The Early Risers Kiwanis Club sponsors the K-Kids at the Intermediate School in Worthington. The club was chartered in the fall of 2000 and have from 60-90 students. The K-Kids are fourth graders who learn leadership skills, accountability, responsibility, self development, service, character education, academic achievement and much more. The two school teachers who lead this club are awesome, told us they don’t want to give this up and as they said – it keeps them with a fourth grade mind for awhile.
Election of Officers: The students elect their own club officers with each one giving a speech as to why they want be an officer. Then the students vote on each position. These officers meet with the school advisors the day before their meeting and approve the agenda.
Parliamentary Procedure: The Early Riser’s club advisors have a fun experience teaching the K-Kids about how to make a motion, second, discussion and then voting. Super fun! And, the students use this at their meetings.
Projects:
Coins for Cancer: The K-Kids students plan and designate a week in February to collect coin for children with cancer and dress in a fun way: Pennies on Monday-Comfy Clothes Day; Nickels on Tuesday-Hat Day; Dimes on Wednesday-Tropical Day; Quarters on Thursday-Camouflage Day; and all coin on Friday-Trojan Spirit Day. The teachers are educating their classes on different types of cancer each day of some local children experiencing cancer. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade have collected as much as $9,000.00 in one week and is donated to Children’s Miracle Network, Children’s Sanford Castle, Sioux Falls, SD. This facility has accommodated as many as 20,000 children in one year. The K-Kids treat the class that raised the most money with a pizza party.
Veteran’s Day Breakfast: The K-Kids serve breakfast at the school to the public and honor the veterans with handmade placemats and a card, a program and then a tour through the school where they have posters on display honoring them.
Staff Recognition: At Christmas the K-Kids serve all staff with hot chocolate and a handmade card.
